Chainam restaurant has a family tradition to defend. It was founded in 1967 by the current owner’s grandfather, and is still located in the same modest old house. The current owner, Khun Duangporn, is proud of this legacy. She does most of the cooking herself, personally. She is wary of imitators and cares to stress out that Chainam is one and unique and with no branches in town or elsewhere.
The restaurant can accommodate about 80 customers in its wide covered terrace, open on the river side. The location is convenient for tourists, central on U Thong Rd, facing Chomsurang Upatham school, about half way between the two popular markets, Chao Phrom and Hua Ro. Customers are an even mix of Thai and Western visitors.
We found the place to be quiet and simple, with a warm family atmosphere. The kitchen is open and located in a way that you have to pass by it on the way in and out, and can easily eye inside. Members of the family sit around at the entrance and in the passage, near the kitchen, ready to lend a helping hand if necessary.
We went two persons for a quick snack and ordered two delicious fried rice dishes, one with pork for 40 B, one with shrimps for 60 B (photos).
