Getting There
Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) is located approximately 250 km northeast of Bangkok. You can reach Korat by bus from Bangkok’s Mo Chit terminal (about 3.5 hours), by train from Hua Lamphong station, or by minivan from Chatuchak. Tuk-tuks and songthaews (shared trucks) are the most common local transport within the city.
About Isaan Cuisine
The Isaan region of northeastern Thailand has its own distinct culinary tradition, influenced by Lao and Khmer cultures. Signature dishes include som tam (spicy papaya salad), larb (spiced minced meat salad), sticky rice (khao niao), and grilled chicken (gai yang). Food in Isaan tends to be spicier and more sour than central Thai food, using ingredients like padaek (fermented fish sauce) and fresh herbs.
Jim Thompson Farm (ไร่จิม ทอมป์สัน) is a working farm and cultural destination in Pak Thong Chai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 30 km south of Korat city. Founded by the Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company, it cultivates mulberry plants (for silk worms), rice, organic vegetables, and promotes traditional Thai silk production.
Who was Jim Thompson?
Jim Thompson was an American businessman who revived the Thai silk industry after World War II, transforming it into a globally recognised luxury product. He disappeared mysteriously in Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands in 1967. His legacy lives on through the Jim Thompson brand — now a major Thai luxury fashion and lifestyle company.
What can visitors do at Jim Thompson Farm?
The farm offers: guided tours of silk production (from mulberry leaf to finished silk), rice paddy walks, organic gardens, an art gallery, restaurants serving local cuisine, and seasonal events. There are also accommodation options for overnight stays. It’s a great educational and cultural experience, especially for families.
Is Jim Thompson Farm worth visiting from Korat?
Yes — it’s an easy day trip from Korat city (about 30–40 minutes by car). The farm offers a genuine insight into Thai silk culture in a beautiful rural setting. Combine it with the Pak Thong Chai silk weaving village market, which sells handmade silk textiles at excellent prices directly from weavers.
