What is There to do in Surin province?
Surin is famous for its Elephant Round-Up Festival (November), Surin silk (some of the finest in Thailand), Khmer temple ruins (Prasat Ta Muen, Prasat Ban Pluang), and Ban Ta Klang — the ‘elephant village’ where Kuay mahout families have lived alongside elephants for generations.
When is the Surin Elephant Round-Up?
The Surin Elephant Round-Up is held annually on the third weekend of November (typically Friday–Sunday). It features hundreds of elephants in traditional costumes, re-enactments of ancient battles, and elephant sports. It’s one of Thailand’s largest and most spectacular festivals.

Ban Ta Klang is an Isaan village 58 km north of Surin that has been home to the Kuay ethnic group — hereditary elephant mahouts — for centuries. The village currently houses around 200 elephants. It’s possible to visit and interact with elephants in a village context, though conditions vary.
