A Morning with the Tigers: Hua Hin Safari & Adventure Park
I finally went to see the Hua Hin Safari & Adventure Park, also known as the hua hin zoo. It turned into one of those small, unexpected mornings that you remember for a long time.
Where it is and how to get there
The park sits in the countryside south of Hua Hin, in the Nong Kae area of Thap Tai, about 15 or 20 kilometres from the centre of town. The last part stretch is on small country lanes and you can tell the place is still growing, with new sections being built as you arrive.
It is open every day, from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon.
The pink ID paid for itself
Here is a practical note for the residents reading this. Like many attractions in Thailand, the park has two prices, one for foreign tourists and a lower one for locals. Because I carry my pink Thai ID card, I paid the local rate. That is exactly the kind of small daily moment that makes the pink card worth having. If you live here and you have it, bring it. It will save you real money at the ticket window.
There are three main ways to visit, depending on how close you want to get to the animals. One option is the shows only. Another adds an elephant ride. The most complete one lets you take your time with the tigers and includes a photo session. I went for the full experience, and on the day I went there was almost nobody ahead of me, which changed everything.
Three shows, two experiences
The park runs three shows through the day: an elephant show, a crocodile show, and a tiger show. They are short, lively, and clearly built for families, but I enjoyed them more than I expected. On top of the shows you can add two hands-on experiences: riding an elephant through the little hill and jungle section, and a photo session with the tigers. Yes, it is very touristic but I still enjoyed it.
Ten minutes with a baby tiger
This was the moment. Because the park was so quiet when I arrived, with no queue at all, I had a baby tiger almost to myself for about ten minutes. He was the size of a big house cat, but his paws were already enormous and beautiful, those wide, soft, heavy paws that tell you exactly what he is going to become. Sitting there with him for that long, with no rush and nobody waiting, was something I will not forget. If you can go on a quiet day, do it.
Two sides and a lot of birds
The park is laid out in two sections. One side is built around the elephants. Crocodiles are there too. The other side is the tiger and lion world. Walking between them, on both sides, you keep meeting birds, and some of them roam freely rather than being closed in. There are cockatoos, flamingos, and others wandering around, which gives the whole place a relaxed, open feeling rather than a row of cages.
My honest take
I will be straight with you: this is not a huge zoo. If you want size and scale, the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo in Korat is in another league, and I have written about that one before. But that is not really the point here. Hua Hin Safari is clean, well kept, easy to reach, and on a quiet morning it gives you something the big parks cannot, which is time and space with the animals. For a relaxed half day close to home, it is a lovely place, and I am glad I finally went.
