Seafood in Cha-Am: Where to Eat
Under construction. Pictures to be added in a few days.
Cha-Am is a Thai weekend town, and the weekend runs on seafood. On Saturday the coaches come in from Bangkok, the deckchairs fill up under the casuarina trees, and everyone eats crab and drinks iced beer. I wrote about that rhythm in Cha-Am is not Hua Hin.
The hard part isn’t finding seafood in Cha-Am. It’s choosing. There are dozens of places, many with the same menu.
So this is a shortlist. My own pick first. Then the places Thai and English reviewers keep coming back to, with what they say, credited to them.
Before you go: the Wednesday rule
Wednesday is beach-cleaning day in Cha-Am, same as in Hua Hin. The chairs come off the sand, and the beachfront seafood places close. Don’t plan your big seafood night for a Wednesday. Go to the night market instead.
Some places away from the sand keep their own day off. I’ve noted the ones the listings give.
And at weekends and on holidays, the good places get packed. Go early or go on a weekday.
My pick: the seafood market by the pier
The obvious move, and still the right one. Fresh, cheap, very local. Near the pier there’s a little seafood spot I liked a lot, something like Lucky Seafood. A good bet. I heard the pier was due for renovation. It’s more than time.
What reviewers recommend
View Talay Seafood (วิวทะเลซีฟู้ด): the sea view without the sea
The name means “sea view.” It doesn’t have one. Wongnai reviewer Coke_Somchai says the sign out front admits it: the restaurant is “not on the sea.” GopOpOp (April 2026) puts it across the road from the beach, close enough to hear the waves.
It’s the most reviewed seafood place in Cha-Am on Wongnai: 4.3 from 571 ratings. Several reviewers say the cooking is done by a mother and father, which is why it tastes like home food.
What reviewers say:
- Littaaa (Aug 2025): no air-con, but shaded. Very busy. Bai liang (a local green) stir-fried with egg was “very good.” Crab meat curry with betel leaves cost “500-something baht” and was worth it.
- cocoa and latte (March 2025) listed prices: butter garlic scallops 250 baht, garlic mantis shrimp 900 baht a kilo, tamarind prawns 250 baht.
- GopOpOp (April 2026): seats 80 to 100, very clean, a small play corner for kids, clean toilets.
- On booking, reviewers disagree. Littaaa says walk-in only, no bookings. cocoa and latte says to call ahead and even order ahead at weekends. Call and ask.
- Listed address: Chonprathan Cement Road, Cha-Am. Wongnai’s directions: after the canal bridge, turn right, 800 m, on the left.
- Hours listed: 11:00 to 21:30. Wongnai shows no Thursday hours, so it may be closed Thursdays. Check.
- Phone listed: 063 229 6635 or 087 532 4145
- Wongnai price band: 251 to 500 baht a head
Sungwean Seafood (สังเวียน ซีฟู้ด): the old name on the beach
The one Thai reviewers call a “Cha-Am legend.” It’s big, it’s near the sand, and it’s been reviewed on Wongnai since at least 2012.
What reviewers say:
- Punyaruk Baingern (Dec 2012): you sit almost on the beach, a bit village-style, packed because it’s famous. Som tam and tom yum were on the sweet side, so tell them if you don’t want that. Food came fast for a busy place.
- NAT (Oct 2024): big plates, so don’t over-order if you’re a small group. Six dishes came to 2,190 baht. Parking may not be enough when it’s full. Dogs were allowed in, in a pet stroller.
- Kalphapon Polwacharapat (Sep 2026): the shrimp cakes were “fluffy,” the sour curry with prawns was rich, the steamed grouper was fresh but “not yet great.” The bill was over 2,000 baht. Service scored 5 out of 10.
- On Google it has 4.1 from 2,640 reviews (Exa Places copy). Recent lines there: “big portion, reasonable prices.”
- Listed address: Soi Cha-Am 35, near Springfield @ Sea Resort (Wongnai)
- Hours listed: 10:00 to 21:00 daily
- Phone listed: 032 472 280 or 086 096 4799
- Wongnai: 3.6 from 471 ratings
Krua Jeh Nong Seafood (ครัวเจ๊นงค์ซีฟู้ด): south, on the sand, with horses
South of town at Bo Khiao beach, off Soi Cha-Am 59 (there’s a 7-Eleven at the soi entrance, says Wongnai). You park outside and a golf cart takes you in.
What reviewers say:
- Qvan Qvan (Sep 2025): clear tom yum with mullet, 250 baht, “fresh fish, eggs in every one.” Prawns in tamarind sauce, 250 baht. Horses walk past on the beach.
- Funkyzboyz Chin (March 2025): sea bass with fish sauce was 350 baht. He says the same dish is 400 baht and up in Pattaya, so this coast still isn’t expensive. No parking at the restaurant itself.
- Benz Pongsakorn (Oct 2025) is the counterpoint: everything on the sweet side, the grilled squid burnt and dry, the crab “not very fresh.” The garlic fried fish was fine.
- Hours listed: 11:00 to 21:00 daily
- Phone listed: 081 986 0916
- Wongnai: 4.1 from 154 ratings
Platoo Restaurant (ปลาทูเรสเตอรอง): the mackerel place
Pla thu is the short mackerel Thais grow up on. This old beach restaurant builds a whole menu around it.
Wongnai reviewer ใบหม่อน wrote the most detailed review (March 2021). Her prices are old, so treat them as a guide:
- Stir-fried holy basil with mackerel liver, 160 baht. Hard to find elsewhere. “Chewy, unusual.”
- Mackerel hoi jo (crab-roll style, but with fish), 150 baht.
- Old-style tom yum with fresh mackerel, not the steamed kind, 160 baht.
Her verdict: varied menu, strong flavours, “OK overall.” Wongnai has it at 3.6 from 333 ratings.
- Hours listed: 10:00 to 22:00 daily
- Phone listed: 032 508 175
Also on the list
- Chomview Seafood. On the beach near the Sheraton, on Soi Cha-Am 59. Google 4.3 from 4,742 reviews (Exa Places copy). A July 2025 reviewer called it “typical Thai average to good quality food at reasonable prices. Ample parking.” That’s a fair way to set expectations.
- Khrua Huai Sai. Google 4.5 from 5,506 reviews, the most reviews on this list (Exa Places copy). The listing shows it closed on Wednesdays. One reviewer (Sep 2025) liked the oyster omelette and the garlic butter scallops, and warned the seafood coconut curry is “super spicy.” Another found the front host welcoming, but nobody came to the air-con room.
How to choose
- Cheap and local: the pier market.
- A family-style meal with the most reviews behind it: View Talay. Check the day.
- Feet in the sand, a big group: Sungwean, or Krua Jeh Nong further south.
- Something you won’t find elsewhere: Platoo’s mackerel dishes.
On prices: a fried sea bass at 350 to 400 baht and garlic scallops at 250 baht are what reviewers paid in 2025 and 2026. Crab and mantis shrimp go by weight, so ask the price per kilo before they cook it.
After the meal, the coast has more. On the way north, stop for a bottle of nam tan sod, the fresh palm sap Phetchaburi is known for. Heading south instead? Hua Hin has its own seafood night on the pier, in my Hua Hin markets list. And if you want a break from Thai food, here are the Korean restaurants in Hua Hin.
