Khon Kaen Food Supply

This place opened early 2014 and sells foreign food just beside Pullman hotel. They distribute for example Koratchef and Gourmet meats products. They also have more than just frozen food and most of the expats in the area will probably like to have a look and find something that might not be selling anywhere else. Salami, curries, steaks are just few of the items available. It is really adjacent to the Pullman’s hotel, few doors down from Pomodoro restaurant, on the small soi that goes to U-Bar. You can’t miss it.   More pictures on our flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50651722@N03/sets/72157650751005070/

Visitor Tips

Located in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), this is one of the many dining options available to visitors and expats in the Isaan region of Thailand. When visiting restaurants in Korat, it is customary to order several dishes to share. Most restaurants in this area serve both Thai and international cuisine, and staff often speak some English.

Getting There

Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) is located approximately 250 km northeast of Bangkok. You can reach Korat by bus from Bangkok’s Mo Chit terminal (about 3.5 hours), by train from Hua Lamphong station, or by minivan from Chatuchak. Tuk-tuks and songthaews (shared trucks) are the most common local transport within the city.

About Isaan Cuisine

The Isaan region of northeastern Thailand has its own distinct culinary tradition, influenced by Lao and Khmer cultures. Signature dishes include som tam (spicy papaya salad), larb (spiced minced meat salad), sticky rice (khao niao), and grilled chicken (gai yang). Food in Isaan tends to be spicier and more sour than central Thai food, using ingredients like padaek (fermented fish sauce) and fresh herbs.

Wine 22 in Khon Kaen

A friend of mine recommend that place called Wine 22. It is about 10 minutes walking from Pullman hotel. If you go on Google Maps, put this information in the search: 16.426269, 102.827667. It is on Ruen Rom street, very close to RADS (a famous bar and complex). It opens at 17:30 until midnight. There is live music and a cellar where you can choose some wine. The selection is not the same as in Bangkok but you still can find some pretty good wine (but not cheap, this is Thailand and wine has a heavy tax). However, food is not expensive in that restaurant and you will surely enjoy the ambiance. If you want to continue the evening, move to Rads almost opposite side where you have other “gastro-pub” and more wine available. That Merlot wasn’t bad at all (And yes, I have seen “Sideways”)   More pictures on Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50651722@N03/sets/72157651187088235/

Central Plaza Khon Kaen

Central Plaza is the biggest shopping center in Khon Kaen. It opened on 3 December 2009. It was the first “Central” in Isaan. Later, they acquired Charoensri Complex in Udon Thani and renamed it Central Plaza Udon Thani. Central is currently building another project in Nakhon Ratchasima. The Central Plaza in Nakhon Ratchasima should opened early in 2016. Central in Khon Kaen is very easy to find and about 10 or 15 minutes walking from Pullman hotel, another landmark of the city. In the basement, TOPS MARKET offers probably some of the best food supply in Khon Kaen. You will find many restaurants on the several floors but especially on the 4th floor. Fast-food like McDonalds is there, as well as many Japanese restaurant. There is a cinema with 8 screens and a bowling with 14 lanes. Sweet Café in Korat

I think this place opened in 2014. At the moment, it is really popular among Thais and foreigners.  If you are looking for some western food at a good price. The ratio quality/price is one of the best that you will find in Nakhon Ratchasima. It is located just beside “Teenee Korat” that closed its doors around 2014. If you want the exact location, click on this link:  http://goo.gl/maps/Bbfrp This café is more than a café: it is a restaurant. It opens quite early and closes at 9pm. However, the kitchen closes at 8pm. They even have egg Benedict!   To give you an idea of the prices, this chicken pizza was 125 baht. Cesar Salad, burgers they have a very large menu and a cozy atmosphere. You can eat inside or outside at Sweet Café in Korat. Below, a lot of pictures of the menu, inside and outside that nice restaurant. We didn’t try the desserts yet but they look fabulous. Kuay Tiow Reua Pa Prathip

Just say it: You sometimes loves a simple noodle soup! In Thailand, the “Chinese style noodle soup” is called “Kuay tiow”. And there is a new place in town that makes them pretty good: It is called “Kuay Tiow Reua Pa Prathip”. “Reua” means boat. “Pa Prathip” is probably a name”. In that place, there are different kinds of noodles you can choose (like most of these places). “Sen Mi” are the smallest one, that you might call “vermicelli” in English. The location of the place on Apple or Google maps, it is located at : 14.947546,102.052261. It is just beside “Oshie Shop” that sells antiques and other retro-classic stuff.

This is “Sen mi” with pork (moo) and spicy broth (pet) but not processed “meat balls” (mai ao look chin)

“Sen Lek” is bigger. They use it in “Pad mi” for example. And you can order “Ba Mi” which is kind of “yellow noodles”. That place will ask you if you want normal, spicy or very spicy. You can also ask “nam tok” which means they put “blood” into it. That is very common in Thailand.

This is “Ba mi” with “Nam Tok”.

I personally do not like the kind of “meatballs” or “processed meat that looks like a ball” called in Thai “Look Chin”. So you can ask “Mai Ao Look Chin”. (I don’t want processed meatballs.). And in your soup, you can ask pork or beef with the broth. Price is about 30 baht for a soup and that place is really good. If you are looking for a cheap and quick meal in Korat, they are opened from 6am to 11pm. You can see our pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50651722@N03/sets/72157650802059382/
