Chiang Rai Night Bazaar: Where Lanna Culture Meets Night Shopping
The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is the most relaxed and authentically northern of Thailand’s evening markets. Unlike the frenetic sprawl of Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar, the Chiang Rai version has kept a slower, more local character — making it a genuinely pleasant place to spend an evening browsing handicrafts, eating street food, and watching traditional dance performances.
The market occupies the site of the old bus station in the city centre, a compact cluster of lanes that became the go-to evening destination once the main bus terminal moved to the outskirts. The relocation freed up prime real estate and gave the bazaar room to develop into something more than a souvenir strip.

What to Buy
The range of goods is excellent for a city of Chiang Rai’s size. The best finds are products rooted in northern Thailand’s Lanna Kingdom heritage and the hilltribe communities of the surrounding mountains: hand-embroidered bags and clothing from Akha, Karen, and Hmong artisans; lacquerware; carved teak; Thai silk; silverwork; and candles. You will also find the usual spread of Thailand souvenirs, DVDs, and cheap clothing — but these are easy to skip past.

Prices at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar are noticeably lower than in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. Bargaining is expected but keep it friendly — sellers here are often the artisans themselves, not middlemen. Expect to bring prices down by 10-20%, more if you are buying several items at once.

Food, Music, and Dance
The central stage hosts free traditional dance performances most evenings — northern Thai Fon Lep (fingernail dance), hilltribe performances, and occasionally live Lanna folk music. The surrounding food stalls and small restaurants serve excellent northern Thai dishes: khao soi (coconut curry noodles), sai oua (northern Thai sausage), grilled meats, and sticky rice.
