About Isaan Cuisine

The Isaan region of northeastern Thailand has its own distinct culinary tradition, influenced by Lao and Khmer cultures. Signature dishes include som tam (spicy papaya salad), larb (spiced minced meat salad), sticky rice (khao niao), and grilled chicken (gai yang). Food in Isaan tends to be spicier and more sour than central Thai food, using ingredients like padaek (fermented fish sauce) and fresh herbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hip Bar in Korat?

Hip Bar is one of Korat’s notable nightlife venues — a bar and entertainment space popular with the local university crowd and young professionals. Korat’s nightlife reflects both a large student population and a significant military presence in the city.

What kind of music do Thai bars play?

Thai bars typically feature a mix: Thai pop and T-pop (current Thai chart hits), international EDM and pop, and often live cover bands playing Thai and Western pop. In Isaan cities, mor lam (traditional northeastern music) and luk thung (Thai country) are also popular at local entertainment venues.

How late do bars stay open in Thailand?

Thai bars in most cities are legally allowed to serve alcohol until 2 AM (last orders). In practice, busy nightlife areas continue until around 2 AM. During certain periods (elections, holidays), alcohol sales may be restricted earlier. Korat follows standard Thai alcohol sale hours (11 AM–2 PM and 5 PM–2 AM).

Is drinking culture different in Thai provincial cities versus Bangkok?

Provincial Thai nightlife (like Korat’s) tends to be more locally focused — fewer foreign tourists, more Thai customers, and genres like luk thung and mor lam more prominent. Prices are generally 30–50% lower than tourist-oriented Bangkok bars. The social dynamic is more relaxed and community-oriented.
