Prasat Phanom Wan: A Living Khmer Sanctuary Near Korat
Prasat Phanom Wan is one of the most rewarding archaeological sites in Isaan – and one of the most overlooked by visitors who focus on the more famous Phimai. Located just 15 km north of Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) on the road to Khon Kaen, this Khmer sanctuary combines genuine historical depth with an active Buddhist temple that gives it a living, breathing character unlike purely archaeological sites.

History
The site dates to the 11th-13th centuries, built during the height of the Khmer Empire’s westward expansion. Inscriptions found on the site confirm it served first as a Hindu sanctuary, then later as a Buddhist temple – a transition common across Khmer sites as the empire’s religion evolved. In the 18th and 19th centuries, a stone Buddhist building was constructed on top of earlier Khmer foundations, creating the layered character you see today.

Getting There
From Korat, take the main road north toward Khon Kaen (Highway 2). After approximately 10 km, look for a sign on the right indicating Phanom Wan. Turn and follow the road for another 5 km. The site is in Ban Makha, Tambon Pho.
