Doi Tung, Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Doi Tung (Thai:ดอยตุง) is a mountain and falls under the province of Chiang Rai in Thailand. The Thai name means “Flag Mountain”. The place witness changing colors of the sky, gorgeous mountain ranges, misty ambience above deep forest and cool winter. It is rightly described by the locals as the “Switzerland in Thailand.” Here, people earn their livelihood from the forests and therefore, the maintenance of the forests is done brilliantly. It’s located in Thailand, near tjhe Burmese border, in what is called the “golden triangle“. It’s located about 30 km north of Chiang Rai city.

The beauty and the attractions of Doi Tung made it a popular tourist destination of Chiang Rai Province. The two most popular attractions of attractions of Doi Tung are royal palace of the King’s mother and the Mae Fah Luang garden.

Mae Fah Luang garden

This garden serves as the ground of the palace, and it is extremely well maintained, covering about 25 Rai. This exquisite garden stands at a height of about 1,500m above the sea level and opened in 1992. The garden is home to immaculate varieties of beautiful shrubs and flowers from different corners of the globe.

Different types of flowering plants blossom every year in this garden and shape an impressive hill-side natural drapery that changes with the seasons. Mae Fah Luang garden is often portrayed as the Kingdom of Thailand’s most superbly landscaped garden, and even the best, in the entire region of Asia Pacific. The garden is also the proud winner of the PATA Gold Awards in 1993 by the Pacific Asia Tourism Association.

Doi Tung Royal Villa


This immaculate palace was constructed by using the architectural patterns of Lanna and Swiss styles. This villa was constructed for the Princes Mother, mother of the King Rama 9. Her Royal Highness decided to live in that place and the entire construction was developed under her direction. The Royal Villa was developed in such a manner so that it can retain its simplicity and multi-functionality.

The construction work began on December 23, 1987. There are four connected buildings to the villa, which are- the Princess Mother’s personal residence, the personal residence of the daughter of the Princess Mother, the personal residence of the grand daughter of the Princess Mother, and a huge reception hall. Long after the death of the Princess Mother (She died in 1995), the villa is a popular tourist attraction. Near the villa, the visitors can find suitable accommodation and restaurant facilities. The villa is open to visitors from 07.30 to 17.30 hours everyday.

Wat Phrathat Doi Tung

This is a thousand-year old temple and definitely among the biggest attractions of Doi Tung. Buddhists from Thailand and various parts of the world used to form pilgrimage in this site. The temple stands at an elevation of 2,000, and it can be reached through a mountain road of 40 km that wanders along the mountainside and tremendous views of Laos and Myanmar.

Doi Tung experience the wide range of tourist attractions and the visitors keep coming back here. The place is a perfect combination of beauty, nature, history and brilliance- overall a great tourist destination.
