According to Wikipedia, Tim Ho Wan’s history started in 2009. “Mak Kwai-pui, formerly a chef of three-Michelin-starred restaurant Lung King Heen, opened a 20-seater dim sum restaurant in Mongkok. Tim Ho Wan would eventually earn a Michelin star of its own in the 2010 Hong Kong and Macau Guide, a distinction which some have stated was a move in response to the criticism that the Michelin Guide was “elitist” and “out of touch with local tastes.” In 2015, its Sham Shui Po, North Point and Tai Kok Tsui branches had all received one Michelin star. Since then, the restaurant has been dubbed as “the world’s cheapest Michelin-star restaurant.”
How the hell does Nakhon Ratchasima has a one-Michelin-Starred restaurant? A branch of that chain opened at Terminal 21. It’s in the basement, just in front of Foodland. Not Mr Pizza, the one beside, hidden. A jewel in the city. DO NOT MISS THAT ONE.
Now, it is closed. The food was fabulous but pricey. Marketing was not great and many people in Korat did not know that was something special. The location at terminal 21 was not great, not easy to spot. But food was good… look the Xiow Long Bao below…
Is there a Tim Ho Wan restaurant in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat)?
Tim Ho Wan, the Hong Kong dim sum chain famous for being the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant, has expanded significantly across Asia. A branch in Korat would be notable — check current locations via Tim Ho Wan’s official website or Google Maps for confirmed Thai locations, as the franchise has opened multiple Thai outposts.
What is Tim Ho Wan known for?
Tim Ho Wan originated in Hong Kong in 2009 and earned a Michelin star almost immediately — becoming famous as the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant in the world. It’s known for its BBQ pork buns (char siu bao, now baked rather than steamed), har gao (prawn dumplings), turnip cake, and other Cantonese dim sum classics at very reasonable prices.
How expensive is Tim Ho Wan compared to other restaurants?
Tim Ho Wan’s value proposition is excellent dim sum at accessible prices. In Thailand, a full dim sum meal at Tim Ho Wan typically runs 300–600 THB per person — significantly cheaper than equivalent quality at a luxury hotel dim sum restaurant (1,500–3,000 THB) but slightly more expensive than local Thai-Chinese dim sum shops.
What dim sum dishes should you order at Tim Ho Wan?
Essential Tim Ho Wan orders: the baked BBQ pork buns (the signature), har gao (prawn dumplings), siu mai (pork and prawn), cheung fun rice noodle rolls (particularly with char siu filling), steamed egg cake, and vermicelli roll. The ‘big four heavenly kings’ (the four signature dishes) are always the starting point for first-timers.
